Walgreens is still refusing to reverse its position on dispensing mifepristone, the abortion pill, in more than 20 states — but the pressure is building.
California has been making a huge impact on convincing the Fortune 500 company to change its mind, as Governor Gavin Newsom canceled a $54 million contract with the corporation.
Newsom’s action has inspired a national coalition to call on President Joe Biden to do the same thing and cancel the more than $155 million in U.S. government contracts with Walgreens and any other contract it has with pharmacies that refuse to dispense mifepristone.
Walgreens is the second-biggest pharmacy in the nation, with more than 9,000 stores that serve 8 million customers every day.
So when the corporation decided to cave to red-state governors and agree not to dispense the abortion pill — even where it’s legal! — Walgreens put millions of women’s health care at risk.
Courage California has organized more than 17,000 people to boycott Walgreens, and we are funding a billboard outside Chicago where the corporation is headquartered. We need to let every corporate pharmacy interfering in women’s health care know that they can’t get away with it.
