Petition Calls on UC Berkeley to Refuse to Play UNC in NC Next Year in Protest of HB2
A new petition from the California-based Courage Campaign is calling on University of California System President Janet Napolitano, Berkeley Chancellor Nicholas Dirks and California Athletic Director Michael Williams to refuse to to play the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill in a football game scheduled for next year, in protest of HB2, one of the most extreme anti-LGBT laws in the country.
Earlier this year, California limited state travel to North Carolina in protest of the law, and Courage Campaign argues that decision should apply to the University of California – Berkeley football team as well.
More than 15,000 people have signed onto the petition since it launched earlier this week. North Carolina Pat McCrory, who signed HB2 into law, is up for reelection on November 8th.

“The movement to boycott North Carolina until it repeals HB2 has become a national outrage,” said Eddie Kurtz, Executive Director of Courage Campaign. “And rightly so. The law profoundly alienates and endangers trans men and women, and anyone whose gender identity is nonconforming.”
“Musicians Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam, and Ringo Starr have canceled concerts, the NBA moved its 2017 All-Star game, and the NCAA has moved seven championship games out of North Carolina. It’s time for University of California Berkeley to follow suit by refusing to play in the state next football season,” added Kurtz.
