“Mitt Gets Worse” Slams Leaked RNC Marriage Platform as Hypocritical and Antiquated
WASHINGTON, DC – In response to the marriage inequality plank that was in the platform leaked just days before the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Florida, the Mitt Gets Worse campaign issued the following statement from founders Rick Jacobs, chair of the Courage Campaign, and David Brock, founder of American Bridge 21st Century:
“The leak of the RNC platform this week underscores exactly how out-of-touch the Republican Party leadership is with average Americans, who support equality for LGBT Americans more than ever before. The plank that specifically opposes marriage equality for same-sex couples, and authored by Family Research Council president Tony Perkins, one of the nation’s most outspoken anti-gay activists, cemented the party’s 19th Century worldview that ‘equal protection under the law’ is to be applied selectively and to the exclusion of millions of LGBT Americans.
“For the Republican Party to embrace policies of separate-and-unequal, and in the same paragraph claim to ‘embrace the principle that all Americans have the right to be treated with dignity and respect,’ is hypocrisy at its most offensive. It is a clear sign of the Republican agenda to end and then roll-back the rights and responsibilities gay Americans and our families have achieved in recent years.
“Surely, the Log Cabin Republicans, who exists to promote full equality in the Republican Party will now find it impossible to endorse Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan, just as they had to pass on endorsing then-President Bush in 2004 when he and the Republican Party were then actively pushing an anti-marriage equality amendment to the Constitution while promoting anti-marriage equality state referenda. The Republican Party and its nominees keep getting worse for LGBT Americans.”
“Mitt Gets Worse” has launched a petition from members urging Log Cabin Republicans to withhold its endorsement of the Romney/Ryan ticket. It can be viewed at http://mittgetsworse.org
