LOS ANGELES — Today, Courage California announced its endorsement of Assemblymember Sydney Kamlager for the California Senate District 30 Special Election primary, set for March 2. Kamlager is running to fill Holly Mitchell’s now-vacant seat following Mitchell’s election to the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.
“The news of Holly Mitchell leaving the senate was bittersweet because it meant that we were losing one of our Courage Score All-Stars in the State Senate and risked having no representation of Black women in the body. But our mood shifted to excitement when we learned that Assemblymember Kamlager was running for the seat,” said Irene Kao, Executive Director of Courage California. “We’re thrilled to endorse Kamlager for Senate District 30. This is Los Angeles’ opportunity to send another progressive Black woman to the State Senate, who will continue the unapologetic fight for equity and justice that was spearheaded by Holly Mitchell.”
As an assemblymember, Kamlager has fought against landlord discrimination, pushed for criminal justice reform and greater law enforcement accountability, and authored bills to fight for equity and justice, such as the CRISES Act, which establishes a pilot program to make community-based organizations first responders instead of police. She is committed to partnering with local and statewide progressive groups and prioritizing our communities over special interests.
“We face a lot of challenges in Los Angeles and California that require effective and compassionate leadership,” said Kao. “Based on Kamlager’s experience in the assembly and the support she has from the community, it is clear to us that Kamlager will co-govern in the interests of all Californians and be a champion for Courage California’s values of progress.
“It’s critical that Angelenos who live in this district show up and vote in March. California must ensure that Black women are represented and our state keeps moving toward — not away — from a government that is more reflective and representative of the people it serves. Getting Kamlager elected is a priority of Courage California and our members in the coming month. She is the leader we need in the State Senate right now,” said Kao.
