The For the People Act (H.R. 1) will clean up our political system, expand and protect voting rights, get big money out of politics, hold elected officials accountable for corruption, and create a democracy that values the voices of all Americans.
The For the People Act:
- Protects and expands access to the ballot, breaking down barriers to exercising the right to vote through reforms including automatic voter registration and blocking racially discriminatory voter purges.
- Makes representation in government more fair by ending partisan and racial gerrymandering.
- Amplifies the voices of ordinary Americans in our politics, now overwhelmingly dominated by a wealthy few, by establishing a small donor matching system for federal races.
- Fights corruption by enacting new ethical standards for elected officials.
With a Democratic majority in the Senate, we have a real chance of passing this unprecedented piece of legislation. But we need to put public pressure on every senator to let them know that we want to live in a country that centers real democracy.
